Cardiac arrest, a plague too often unknown

50,000 people in France die every year from cardiac arrest. So this represents more than 130 deaths per day! This figure rises to 400,000 in Europe and 7 million in the world.
In nearly 70% of cases, cardiac arrest takes place in front of a witness, but the survival rate in France is only 7% while it is 40% in Amsterdam in the Netherlands or Lugano in Switzerland.
According to Medical Reseach specialists, early defibrillation would save several thousand people each year.

In case of cardiac arrest time is a decisive factor that determines the chances of survival.
After 4 minutes, it is estimated that for every minute elapsed, the chance of survival decreases by 10%. Without oxygenation, the brain can be severely damaged and subsequently have severe sequelae.
In less than 10 minutes without resuscitation, the victim’s vital prognosis can be fatal. Given the time needed to get to the scene of the accident, it is therefore essential that the witnesses of a cardiac arrest be able to call the rescue and start the resuscitation of the victim.

Staying Alive

More than 120,000 defibrillators (AED) are listed worldwide within the Staying Alive application developed by AEDMAP.
This application offers multiple features and services including:

  • Location of the nearest defibrillators
  • Addition, modification, and validation of defibrillators
  • Citizen Responders management
  • Tutorials on CPR gestures

It is available for free for IPhone & Android.

SURVIVAL CHAIN

In case of cardiac arrest, it is essential to start CPR in order to increase the victim’s chances of survival.

CALL

As soon as you have found that the victim is unconscious and not breathing, you must call 112 or 911.

START CPR

The victim must be lying on his back on a hard plane. Perform 120 compressions per minute. Place your hands in the middle of the sternum and use your weight to push the sternum 4 to 5 cm.

DEFIBRILLATE

Open the defibrillator and follow the voice instructions that guide you step by step. The use of an AED does not require any training, it is a very simple device to use and without any danger to you or the victim.

WAIT FOR HELP

Never leave the victim alone, wait for the paramedics to come in and take care of the victim. Leave the pads in place.

CITIZEN RESPONDERS CONCEPT

The “Citizen Responder” allows volunteers trained in CPR to register on the application Staying Alive and thus become reachable by emergency services (firefighters, EMS) in case of cardiac arrest in the vicinity in order to rescue the victim.
